Accreditation

The South African Theological Seminary was the first private tertiary institution in South Africa to receive accreditation for the M.Th by the Council on Higher Education, which has a stated policy of national and international comparability. In this regard, we have been subjected to a very stringent evaluation. You are therefore assured that the degree you earn is the highest standard and that the credits are internationally portable.

Our Masters programme offers you a very wide range of focus areas, each of which is supervised by highly competent academic specialists, who have been very carefully selected to provide you with the levels of service excellence, for which we have become known.

Options

OPTION ONE: The research MTh

RES5150 Research Methodology MANDATORY PREREQUISITE: Upon enrolment ALL MTh candidates are required to complete the RES5150 Research Methodology manual as an entrance requirement into the Masters programme. Students will have up to five (5) months to work through the manual online (MySats). The final outcome is a 3 – 5 page draft research proposal. You will have three (3) opportunities to submit a reasonable draft proposal. If you are successful you will be able to continue into the MTh programme and be assigned a supervisor/facilitator, if you are unsuccessful you will not be allowed to continue but be withdrawn from the programme. If the course facilitator feels that the third and final submission is questionable he will consult with two faculty members for guidance before making the final decision.

The research MTh consists of a 180-credit thesis of approximately 50,000 words (150 pages) in a field of specialisation. You begin with the course RES5300 Research Methodology, which culminates in the submission of a research proposal for an MTh thesis. Your proposal must be approved by the Postgraduate Committee, after which you may proceed with writing the thesis. You have a maximum of one year to get your proposal passed. If you fail to do so, you will not be permitted to continue with the programme.

Due to the nature of the research degree, the study may be undertaken in any area of specialisation within the field of theology. The table below lists some of the standard specialisations.

The integrated MTh (forthcoming)

During the course of 2012 we plan to introduce our most exciting MTh programme to date—an integrated Master of Theology. We realise that Christian leaders need to understand theology in an integrated or holistic way if they are to be thinking practitioners, able to lead the church effectively in an ever-changing world. They need to know how to think theologically, drawing together the perspective offered by each branch of theology, i.e. biblical studies, historical theology, systematic theology, missiology, and practical theology. The integrated MTh will teach you how to do theology in ministry. By the end of the programme, you will be able to integrate insights from each branch of theology to discern God’s view and will concerning life or ministry issues.

We are still finalising the details, but the programme is likely to consist of five courses and a mini-thesis. Please contact the PG Registrar for more

Enrolment Requirement

The minimum admission requirement is a relevant Bachelor Honours Degree. A “professional” Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 96 credits at level 8 or a Postgraduate Diploma may also be recognised as meeting the minimum entry requirement to a cognate Master’s Degree programme. In all cases, the qualification must have been earned at an accredited institution. In the case of foreign qualifications the institution must be accredited by a recognised accrediting body or by the institution’s national government. Candidates must have achieved an above average grade in their entry-level qualification.

The Seminary offers a free, no obligation evaluation of your transcripts, which can either be faxed to us at + 27 11 234-4445 or scanned and sent as email attachments to postgraduate@sats.edu.za . We will initiate a response to your request within two days of receipt.
