This year (2010) Pneumatix Namibia started with 9 students on board. In the light of our Vision and Mission as Pneumatix Namibia we decided to implement the Crossroads course offered by SATS. Our students completed Crossroads 1 & 2 this year and found it filled with fun, laughter and insight. We use “Crossroads” as part of our training in a gap year process. The first and primary aim of the process is bringing young guys and ladies from different walks of life, different denominations, fresh out of high school, to a place where they can commune with God in a living and loving relationship. To make this a reality the Word of God is one of the most integral parts. This is where “Crossroads” bear's the greatest weight in our training! It lays the foundation.

A word from the Crossroads Presenter for Pneumatix Namibia:

“Crossroads” touches on almost every major area theologically, thus making it a very comprehensive study guide. To give an idea, it ranges from assurance of salvation and the salvation process and -work of our Lord Jesus Christ, through to topics such as: The use and Abuse of Spiritual Gifts; Evolution: Faith, Foe, Fiction; Your Role in His Plan; Leading God's Way; worldviews, Spiritual Warfare, and different kinds and ways of Bible study, just to name a few. The work load of the course is minimal. The most of the work load consists of reading the material and making it your own, yet also provides slideshows and handouts that needs filling in to test and solidify your new knowledge. Time is the only enemy. The more time you spend in it, the more you get.

The material is plain and very straight forward, making it easy for study and presentation. This I guess is also the great danger of “Crossroads”; the foundational knowledge is handed to you on a silver platter. Thus making it easy to swallow, but for knowledge to become true wisdom, experience, questions, testing and the revelation of the Holy Spirit is needed in an increasing manner. At some point in the course the conclusion to the topic is actually left open-ended, left without a direct answer, only the questions to be considered. This in itself showed me that the material was intended to portray truth and not some force fed theology that makes me fit in. An extreme positive in the course for me, is the fact that both truth and lie is portrayed in most topics, and then these two are analysed and the differences is revealed This brings understanding and not just knowledge. I must admit, the best part of class with the students is always the part where some disagree. Only in such cases can one learn.

On a personal note, I finished my B-Th degree before I ever touched “Crossroads.” It should've been the other way around, because it lays the foundation and makes a fondness for study grow on the inside. I would use this course in a group setup most of the time but for the sole purpose of allowing the debate and differences to help shape your understanding and insight. I would encourage anyone to make use of this great course, it allows you the opportunity to be stretched in your capacity as a child of Christ, to be introduced to more than just the norm, to truly be able to live and lead as God intends.

From the Students:

The Crossroads course lays out basic principles that everyone should know. It has a way of breaking open valuable things about God and it gives you the perspective you need to flourish in God's ways. (Eloise Reinhardt) It gave me clarity about Biblical principles and blew my box I had about God and Christianity. (Jarike Slabbert) It gives you a wider perspective. (J.W Prinsloo ) Crossroads opened my mind and my heart to seek God's face in a more intimate way. It widened my view of God's unconditional, unfailing love, grace, mercy and sovereignty. A lot of questions in my heart were answered through crossroads and a lot of grey areas in my life I could sort out by the knowledge I received from this course. (Quinita Botes)

Crossroads is truly a fulfilled course.

Mike Sharman, teaching Crossroads class, illustrates the lesson to Dena Warren, Dave Warren and Julie Linden.

Mike Sharman, member of Novum Baptist Church, teaches adult Sunday school and Wednesday night bible studies. He currently writes the curriculum, however he found an opportunistic course through the South African Theological Seminary. Deciding to use it as a way to equip adults with a ministry opportunity, he has brought the course to Novum Baptist Church. The course, called CROSSROADS, begins Sept. 9 and will be held on Wednesday nights.

It is a two-year program designed to meet the needs of any church body and the regional Christian community.

Broken down into CROSSROADS 1 (the way to live) and CROSSROADS 2 (the way to lead), each year comprises a 30-week program. Upon completion, students have the opportunity to use it for a certificate, diploma or degree program through South African Theological Seminary. There is an opportunity to earn 48 learning credits upon completion of the entire two-year program.

Novum is exploring the potential of becoming a full partner with the South African Theological Seminary so that they can provide Ph.D. programs. They are currently a satellite campus for college programs through this seminary.

CROSSROADS, designed by South African Theological Seminary, is being offered locally to provide adult students with a discipleship and leadership training school. It is not designed to be an accredited, college-level program. Sharman will be the primary leader with his wife, Nancy, leading sessions primarily dealing with prayer.

The way to live is the first year program. The focus is to equip all Christians with the knowledge, skills and character needed to live solid, fruitful lives for Christ. The second-year program, the way to lead, focuses on those believers who wish to equip themselves to become leaders in the church.

The cost per year, per person, is $50 which includes course materials.

Registration can be completed the first night of the course. For more information contact Sharman at 540-727-1007.

Pastor Trevor Anderson of: Lighthouse Family Church in Port Elizabeth commented on the programme as follows:

“For myself as a pastor it was good to go over and remind myself of some theological perspectives I have not dealt with for years. The way the course is written is concise and makes complex theological concepts easy to teach. I think a further value is that it offers the average church member the opportunity to get an understanding of foundational theological principles that will grow their faith. One of the challenges I find as a pastor is how few Christians are able to process the issues of today in a biblical way and Crossroads is a great tool to address this. We have had fantastic discussions and it has been enjoyed by all attending”.

More and more churches are realising the value of running the Crossroads programme from the South African Theological Seminary. Eleven new churches have joined this year alone, one of which is running the programme with 320 of its members!
